Project Overview

This Middletown, NJ project is one of the most landscape-intensive transformations Scenic View Landscaping has completed. The property’s significant hillside behind the pool created both the challenge and the opportunity — rather than terracing it flat or building a massive retaining wall, the design uses natural stone boulder steps winding through layered plantings to connect the pool level to the upper yard.

The result is a backyard that feels like it grew into the hillside rather than being imposed on it. The scope includes a paver pool patio with spa coping, a stone veneer retaining wall with paver steps, natural stone boulder steps, a complete landscape design covering the full hillside, and landscape lighting tying everything together.

Paver Pool Patio and Coping

The paver pool patio wraps the rectangular pool and spa with a generous deck width, creating distinct zones for lounging, dining, and poolside seating. A curved section on the far side of the pool accommodates four lounge chairs on a raised platform above the retaining wall, giving that area a clear view across the pool and into the landscaped hillside.

Custom coping was installed around the pool and spa edges. A dining area with table and umbrella sits on the house side of the patio, with a covered structure adjacent for shaded seating.

Stone Retaining Wall and Paver Steps

A stone veneer retaining wall separates the pool patio from the raised lounging area, managing a significant grade change across the width of the backyard. Paver steps built into the wall provide access between levels. The wall’s stone veneer material matches the surrounding hardscape, and the raised area above it creates one of the best vantage points on the property — a lounging platform that overlooks the entire pool area.

Natural Stone Boulder Steps

The standout feature of this project. Natural stone slab steps wind up the landscaped hillside from the pool patio to the upper yard, bordered by large boulders on both sides. Each stone tread was hand-selected and placed to follow the natural contour of the slope rather than cutting a straight line through it.

The steps serve a practical purpose — connecting the fenced pool area to the rest of the property — but they’re also the visual centerpiece of the backyard. In spring, creeping phlox cascades across the boulders in pink and lavender, and the brass path lights lining the stairway make the entire hillside glow at night.

Hillside Landscaping

The landscape design on this project goes well beyond the typical pool patio planting bed. The entire hillside is planted with a layered mix designed for four-season interest and low maintenance on a slope.

The planting plan includes creeping phlox for spring ground cover and color across the boulder steps, Japanese maple for fall color and structural contrast, ornamental grasses for year-round texture and movement, layered evergreen and deciduous shrubs for depth and screening, and perennials throughout the beds for seasonal blooms. A gravel path at the base of the hillside provides a transition between the paver patio and the planted slope.

Landscape Lighting

Brass mushroom-style path lights are positioned along the natural stone steps and gravel path, illuminating the hillside after dark and providing safe navigation between levels. The lighting makes the stone steps and cascading plantings visible from the pool patio at night — turning the hillside into a lit landscape feature rather than a dark backdrop.
