Project Overview

This Old Bridge, NJ project transformed a backyard on a wooded lot into a multi-level outdoor living space centered around an existing rectangular pool. Scenic View Landscaping designed and installed the full scope of work — from a raised patio with stone retaining wall to a paver pool patio with coping, paver steps with integrated LED lighting, a paver walkway, and a complete landscaping package with lighting throughout.

The property’s grade change between the house and the pool area defined the layout. The design uses a stone retaining wall with pillars to manage the elevation while creating a clear separation between the raised entertaining patio and the poolside lounging area below.

Raised Patio and Retaining Wall

The raised patio connects directly to the home’s rear exit and serves as the main entertaining and dining area. It sits above the pool level, held by a stone retaining wall that runs across the width of the yard. Capped stone pillars are set at intervals along the wall, adding architectural detail and defining the transition between levels.

The elevated position gives the raised patio a clear sightline across the pool and into the wooded lot beyond — making it a natural vantage point for keeping an eye on the pool while entertaining or dining.

Pool Patio and Coping

The paver pool patio wraps the rectangular pool on all sides with a generous deck width. Custom coping was installed around the pool edge for a clean finished line and a comfortable surface at the water’s edge. The paver surface matches the raised patio above, creating a unified look across both levels despite the grade change.

Three lounge chairs line the far side of the pool patio, positioned for afternoon sun. In-deck fountain jets arc water from the patio surface into the pool, adding movement and sound to the space.

Paver Steps with LED Step Lights

Paver steps with integrated LED under-tread lighting connect the raised patio to the pool patio below. The steps are built into the retaining wall and flanked by stone pillars with caps on both sides. The step lights provide safe navigation between levels at night while adding a clean architectural detail visible from poolside.

Paver Walkway

A paver walkway extends from the pool patio into the side yard, connecting the backyard to the rest of the property. Brass mushroom-style path lights line both sides of the walkway, and planting beds with boxwood run along one edge. The walkway is wide enough for two people to walk side by side and uses the same paver as the pool patio for visual continuity.

Landscaping and Plantings

The landscaping was designed to complement the hardscape, establish privacy, and add seasonal color to the space.

Key planting features include Japanese maple specimens positioned at the corners of the pool patio, providing vibrant red foliage as a focal point against the spring-green wooded lot. Boxwood shrubs line the base of the retaining wall and frame the walkway and step transitions. An arborvitae privacy hedge runs along the fence line, screening the pool area from neighboring properties. Foundation plantings with ornamental grasses and perennials fill the beds at the base of the retaining wall. Fresh sod was installed across the lawn areas to complete the property.

Landscape Lighting

The landscape lighting package ties the space together after dark and makes the backyard fully usable in the evening.

The lighting plan includes:
